Jane Slater Marquis (born 1922) works feature mediums of acrylic on canvas, quilted fabrics, and stained-glass exploring the possibilities of form through distortion of shape, material, and geometry. Slater’s love for the mountains was discovered as a child growing up in the Rocky Mountains of Utah. She followed her love for mountains to the Blue Ridge to study fine art at Black Mountain College at age 18. Slater received her undergraduate degree from Black Mountain College after she curated her own senior show featuring matére studies that focused on leaves and eggshells. She met her husband, Lucian Marquis at the college. They later moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where they raised their two children. Slater’s later work continues to focus on natural forms in mediums of stain-glass and quilted fabrics influenced by Josef Albers’ lessons on color theory and the vibrant colors of Santa Fe, where she currently lives.
