Hazel Larsen Archer (1921-2001) a photographer closely associated with the documentation of Black Mountain College activities. Without the photographs she produced, there would be little evidence of the events and atmosphere at Black Mountain College. Her work has better shaped the image that scholars have of BMC. Due to a childhood case of polio, Archer spent most of her life in a wheelchair. Throughout her nine years as both a student and a teacher at Black Mountain she produced images that highlighted both the seriousness and lightheartedness of the college’s work and environment. Archer continued to live in Black Mountain after she left the college in 1953, though she would eventually move to Tucson, AZ. In 1963 she was the adult education director of the Tucson Art Center. This organization would eventually become the Tucson Museum of Art. Archer continued to live in Tucson until her death in 2001. Hazel Larsen Archer
